The Best Wigs for a Job Interview

We all know you’re smart and amazing, girl. You’re responsible and got all the qualifications down, that’s great! But that does not guarantee that you’ll get that dream job. Let’s face it– before you say a single word to the interviewer, you have already made an impression based on how you look. That first glance is important and you’ll only have a few seconds to make a great impression.

We’re here to help you nail that dream career. Here’s a list of the wigs that will best highlight the smart and brilliant woman that you truly are.

Sleek and straight

A sleek and straight human hair wig kept down and kept away from your shoulders is a good option to display a professional yet feminine aura.

“It’s fine for women to wear their hair down for an interview, as long as it is neatly styled, stays out of the face, and isn’t played with,” says Lori Cooper, founder of Wardrobe Wisdom and a professional wardrobe consultant for eight years.

If you are worried about having to push your hair out of your face all the time, a style with one side pulled back can be a happy compromise between wearing your hair down and styling it in a full updo. You may also just twist one side back, and secure it behind your ear with a bobby pin.

Fabulous bob

Not only is a short hairstyle a great solution to minimize maintenance and speed up your morning routine, but it also lends a unique, edgy appeal to your look. Short hairstyles also parade an independent, no-nonsense attitude.

In the early 19th century, flappers sported shorter, daring haircuts that defined them and made a powerful statement about their feelings on women’s liberation.

A Yale psychology professor, Marianne LaFrance, also conducted a survey that found that women with short hair seem to be perceived as more intelligent and confident, but not as sexy, as women with long, straight hair. This is perfect if you strive to succeed in a male-dominated field, where you want them to focus on your ability and not be distracted by your natural sexiness.

Want to add some life to your straight, short hair wig? You can chop it up with spunky layers, and texture. This will make you look professional and stylish at the same time.

Medium length and wavy

Natural waves give off a relaxed, casual, and amiable vibe. It adds body and style to your hair, without looking too over-the-top or over-done.

In the same study, LaFrance found that women with medium length, casual-looking hairstyles are viewed as more intelligent and good-natured.

Another option would be to curl the ends of your wig and leave the top straight, this is a nice way of giving your hair a more styled, polished appearance.

Trendy Braids

Braided hair can look very professional. Furthermore, they are a way better choice than a ponytail if you want your style to last longer without hair sprays and gels.

Get creative! Don’t feel limited to a basic, straight-down-your-back braid. From a side braid, a braid of braids, to a french or a fishtail braid, there are a lot of options! You can certainly have some fun, just remember to keep it nice and neat, more low-key than all-out.

Wear it up

There’s nothing more professional-looking than a hair cleanly worn up. The neat, high bun is the perfect choice to get your hair up and out of the way, without compromising style. First, sweep your hair high on your head, leaving one piece free, and twist into a bun. Then, secure with a hair tie. To conceal the elastic, wrap the free piece around it and pin the piece of hair underneath the bun with a bobby pin.

Avoid looking silly by placing it at the very top of your skull; rather, find the top and center, and then move a few inches down, so your bun sits halfway in between the top of your hairline and your eyebrows. Veer away from the messy bun look as it might give a “hurried” impression, and you might be judged as a procrastinator.

The basic ponytail is also a great, foolproof option. Spice things up by using your preferred method of curling to add medium-width curls to your wig, and then finish the look with a pretty side pony. Leave a few tendrils loose for a more relaxed look, but make sure that they don’t distract you or hang in your face during the interview.

You may also pull your hair back with a smoothing cream, and twist into a low bun. This is a timeless look, perfect if you’re going for a classy, classic vibe.

Word of caution, ladies, don’t ever go to an interview with a bad hair day! Instead, wear a wig that makes you feel confident and smart.

A separate Yale University study by LaFrance delved into the psychology of bad hair days. They found that people’s self-esteem goes awry when their hair is out of place. They feel less smart, less capable, more embarrassed, and less sociable.

The study surveyed nearly 3,400 women and had them rank the intensity they experience regarding 20 emotions relative to their hair.  Bad hair was found to be associated with the emotions of hostility, shame, and irritability.

“We make choices every day about the kind of person we want to be, and we ask ourselves, do we look our best? Are we putting out there what we want people to see? The choices we make about how we look say something about our social identities and when the choices fit, that’s terrific, but when it doesn’t you feel out of sorts and that loss of control can derail your self-confidence,” LaFrance says. The stress of a bad hair day is on par with spilling coffee on your blouse, she says. “It can make your mood sink like a stone, in the same way.”
